This falls under the heading of a Manufacturing-type inventory model, but QuickBooks (currently, at least) really only supports a Retail inventory model. That is, it can't convert from "parts" to "assemblies" via some formula--which, if I understand correctly, is akin to what you need to do.
There are beginning to be some custom QuickBooks add-ons which may help, however. Have a look at the Work Orders product at www.numbercruncher.com ...it may or may not help for what you're wanting to do.
Also, be watching for new add-on releases at www.quickbooks.com (Intuit's QuickBooks site). With the new programming interface available since QuickBooks 2002 Pro, I expect there will soon be more Manufacturing-type inventory add-ons released for QuickBooks.
